Grundy County Release Meanings
A release record is custodian-specific. It states when the named agency stopped holding a person, why the agency acted, and whether another custodian took charge. At the Grundy County Jail, departure can follow a court-authorized pretrial release, completion of a county sentence, dismissal, or time served. It can also be a transfer to the Illinois Department of Corrections, another county, the U.S. Marshals Service, or another authorized agency. The word “transfer” is crucial. A person who has left Grundy custody may still be confined elsewhere.
Grundy publishes no public current-inmate roster and no recent-release feed. An absent name therefore proves nothing. Even where a live roster exists, released people usually disappear from it because the roster describes current custody. For Grundy, the durable evidence is the Sheriff’s received and discharged-or-transferred entry, read with the court disposition. Illinois VINE can give fast notice, while the agency record supplies the official custody event.
| Departure type | What it means | Next source |
|---|---|---|
| Community discharge | Grundy physically released the person under lawful authority. | Sheriff custody record, VINE, and court order |
| IDOC transfer | County custody ended, but state prison custody began. | IDOC search and court mittimus |
| Other-county transfer | Grundy stopped holding the person for the contract or committing county. | Both agencies’ custody records and controlling docket |
| Federal or ICE movement | A federal custodian may follow the local jail departure. | BOP, federal docket, USMS records, or ICE ODLS |
Grundy County Release Record Fields
A focused record request should identify the person and confinement, then ask for fields already kept by the agency. Use the full name, date of birth if known, and an approximate booking range. Request the booking or custody number, arresting agency, receiving facility, receipt time, discharge or transfer time, disposition code, release authority, and destination or receiving agency if recorded. Ask for the booking photograph only when it is relevant and available.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Received date and time | When Grundy began physical custody for that booking |
| Discharged or transferred date and time | When Grundy stopped holding the person and how the event was classified |
| Disposition or release code | The agency’s recorded reason or authority, which should be quoted before it is paraphrased |
| Destination or receiving agency | Whether another custodian followed the Grundy departure |
| Booking number and photo | Identifiers that tie the response to the right event and person |
Do not merge three different dates. A judge may enter an order before jail staff finish discharge. The jail timestamp marks physical departure from that facility. An IDOC Last Paroled Date can later mark prison departure to mandatory supervised release, often called MSR. If exact timing matters, request the custody log and obtain the matching court order.
Request Grundy County Release Records
The Grundy County Sheriff FOIA page lists the official request channels and records contacts.
The page is the local route for asking for the discharge-or-transfer row rather than relying on an unofficial name list.
- Describe the booking with the full name, birth date if known, and approximate confinement date.
- Ask for the received timestamp, discharged or transferred timestamp, disposition code, destination, booking number, and available photo.
- Send the request in the email body to foia@sheriff1.com, fax it to 815-941-3463, or deliver it to the Sheriff’s Office, Attn: FOIA Officer, 111 E. Illinois Avenue, Morris, IL 60450.
- Ask for segregable, nonexempt fields if part of the record is withheld. An agency supplies existing records; it need not create an explanation.
For an ordinary noncommercial request, 5 ILCS 140/3 generally allows five business days for compliance or denial, plus a possible five-business-day extension. The first 50 black-and-white letter or legal pages are free, then the listed ceiling is $0.15 per page. Certification may cost up to $1. No special Grundy booking-photo fee was found. Records Division is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at 815-941-3240.
Illinois Law on Grundy Releases
5 ILCS 140/2.15 expressly covers the time and date a person was received into, discharged from, or transferred from an arresting agency’s custody. That makes the transfer field especially useful. The law supports access to chronologically maintained arrest information, but it does not require a sheriff to operate a permanent web roster or a rolling three-day gallery.
Retention is separate from online display. Local records are managed under the Local Records Act and approved Downstate Local Records Commission procedures. Research did not establish a Grundy-specific retention period for this record series, so no fixed number should be assumed. Sealing or expungement under 20 ILCS 2630/5.2 can limit public access. Sealing does not always mean physical destruction, and protected juvenile or expunged material should not be reconstructed from stale copies.
Find Grundy County Released Inmates
Start with the last known custodian and case type. That choice prevents most errors.
- For a recent county-jail event, check Illinois VINE and call the jail at 815-941-3243.
- Search the exact Grundy court in Judici. Read the latest disposition, sentence, release condition, custody credit, dismissal, or commitment entry.
- If the court shows an IDOC commitment, use the official state offender search. A county transfer is not a state-prison release.
- For a federal sentence use BOP. For federal pretrial custody, use the federal docket and USMS records. Check ICE ODLS only when an immigration transfer is plausible.
- Obtain the Sheriff custody record and Clerk order when a formal or historical answer is needed.
The 24-Hour Releases and 72-Hour Releases guides explain the local fallback because Grundy has neither feed. A Release Date Lookup applies when an IDOC projection, rather than an accomplished release, is the question.
Grundy Release Orders on Judici
The Grundy Judici court search uses court code IL032015J and may present a CAPTCHA.
Use the docket to find the legal authority, then pair it with the Sheriff record that shows when physical custody ended.
A dismissal or release order does not prove staff completed discharge at the same moment. Another warrant, hold, case, or custodian may still apply. The Grundy Circuit Clerk provides copies at 111 E. Washington Street, Room 30, Morris. Its official fees begin at $2 for page one, with separate rates for later pages and certification. Adoption and juvenile records are not public, and other court restrictions can apply.
IDOC Search for Grundy Releases
The Illinois Department of Corrections inmate search covers people committed to state custody, not every person who leaves the Grundy jail.
The official form can be searched by Last Name, IDOC Number, or Birthdate. Try name variants before deciding no state profile exists.
| IDOC field | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Offender Status and Location | Whether state custody or supervision appears active and where IDOC places the person |
| Admission Date | When the state custody episode began |
| Projected Parole Date | Expected physical prison departure to MSR; it is not proof that release happened |
| Last Paroled Date | An actual past prison departure to parole or MSR |
| Projected Discharge Date | Expected end of the whole state sentence and supervision |
A fully discharged profile may return no match. IDOC itself lists completed sentence or parole as one reason. For a historical final discharge, use the court record and written IDOC confirmation. A person can be released from prison yet remain in IDOC legal custody on MSR. See Post-Release Supervision for that distinction.
Special Illinois Early Release Notices
The IDOC earned-credit notice page covers a narrow class of releases accelerated by earned discretionary sentence credit.
This specialized page can corroborate a qualifying early release, but it is not a general list of all Grundy County or Illinois releases.
Under 730 ILCS 5/3-6-3(a)(5), the narrow process includes prosecutor notice and an online identity and recent-photo entry around release, retained through the first MSR year or return to custody. Sentence credit is not a promised percentage for every case. Offense, date, court credit, sentence structure, program credit, and disciplinary decisions can change the projection.
VINE Alerts for Grundy Releases
The Illinois VINE portal can report custody changes from participating county, state, and court systems.
Note the reporting agency and exact event wording, then verify the event with the agency that supplied it.
Search one person with a full name and known identifier. Compare every plausible match. Register before the expected event, because a person who has already aged out may no longer be available for alerts. Phone registration uses a four-digit PIN; email registration does not. VINE is free and useful for timely notice, but it is not a certified discharge record and should not be the only source used for safety decisions.
Getting Home After Grundy Release
Grundy Transit is a demand-response service, not a fixed jail route. Riders can call 888-786-0862 with pickup and drop-off addresses. The county recommends scheduling two to three business days ahead, while same-day rides depend on capacity. Published one-way fares are $4 within Grundy County and $6 to or from Joliet, with exact change or another accepted fare method.
No jail-release partnership or guaranteed pickup was documented. Release timing can change, so a rider must coordinate with Transit and the jail. This is a general local option, not proof of when someone will leave custody.
Current Grundy Pretrial Release
The jail handbook still contains cash, certified-check, and CourtMoney bond language. Illinois ended cash bail in 2023, so that text should not be treated as current instructions for a new case. Current pretrial release follows the court’s order. Check Judici and confirm case-specific steps with the jail or Circuit Clerk.
Legacy bond text may relate to an older case or simply remain on an old page. It does not establish that payment will cause release now. The operative court order and completed jail discharge are the records that matter.
Grundy Jail Population Snapshot
The April 10, 2024 IDOC inspection recorded 21 people at the jail, including 19 male and two female detainees, against a rated capacity of 63. The county page separately states capacity as 65. These figures should remain attributed because the sources may use different dates or definitions. The inspection figure is a one-day snapshot. It is not an annual booking total, a release count, or evidence of a typical daily population.
Property After a Grundy Release
The jail handbook says an IDOC transfer requires a property-release form and gives family 30 days to collect property before remaining items are disposed. Remaining commissary funds are returned by check or debit card Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mail arriving after release or transfer is returned rather than forwarded.
These tasks also reveal why the custody label matters. An IDOC transfer is a departure from the county jail, but it is not community release. Call the jail for current property instructions and do not infer custody status from a property pickup alone.
Visiting Grundy Release Offices
The jail, Circuit Clerk, and Probation office are clustered at or near the courthouse in Morris. Portable electronic devices are generally prohibited in the courthouse unless an exception applies. A person researching records in person should carry the case number on paper, follow security rules, and request both the court disposition and jail discharge-or-transfer record. The court record explains authority; the custody record confirms the physical event.
Intercounty Grundy Jail Transfers
The Grundy jail was built in 1975, renovated in 2001, and had no noncompliance findings in the 2024 IDOC inspection. More important for release research, the inspection says the jail houses people for Cook County and neighboring counties. A person can physically leave Grundy yet remain held for the same matter by another county.
Identify the arresting agency, committing county, and controlling court. Ask Grundy when its custody ended, then ask the receiving or contract county when its custody began or ended. Until a community-discharge record appears, describe the event as a transfer from Grundy rather than a release from all custody.
Federal and ICE Release Checks
No BOP prison, ICE detention center, or verified ICE contract facility was found in Grundy County. Still, USMS may house a federal pretrial person in local space. BOP covers sentenced federal records from 1982 forward. A past BOP Release Date with no institution means departure from BOP custody only. It does not rule out supervision or another custodian.
ICE’s Online Detainee Locator is a current-custody tool, not a release archive. Search by A-number and country of birth or by biographical details when a Grundy record identifies an immigration detainer. No result can mean release, removal, transfer, mismatch, or delay. The safest wording always names the custodian whose departure is proven.
Where Grundy Release Records Appear
| System | Best use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Grundy Sheriff record | Actual county receipt, discharge, or transfer timestamp | Must usually be requested |
| Judici and Clerk | Legal disposition, sentence, dismissal, or release order | Order time may precede physical release |
| IDOC search | State custody, actual Last Paroled Date, and projections | Does not cover county-only custody; discharged profiles may vanish |
| VINE | Timely custody-change notice | Not a certified permanent record |
| BOP or ICE | Custodian-specific federal status | Neither proves freedom from every agency |
Grundy County Release Facilities
Grundy County Jail is the only verified operational adult detention facility physically in the county. Illinois Department of Corrections institutions receive sentenced state transfers, though no state prison was identified in Grundy. Federal/USMS contract custody may apply to a local federal hold. ICE custody may follow an immigration transfer, while Municipal lockups may create short custody records that never reached the county jail. Each custodian requires its own proof.
